At the start of 2015 Sky News carried out an investigation into the use of steroids in the UK, and found that up to 1 million Brits could be using steroids on a regular basis, as we reported here.
Indeed it was said at the time that Britain was facing a steroids epidemic, and this still seems to be the case right now in 2016 because new data from many different needle exchanges across the country also suggests that up to a million people are using anabolic steroids to increase muscle and boost performance.
This latest investigation was carried out by the ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain, who also took the opportunity to speak to Spencer Matthews and Dr Hilary Jones about this very subject:
Spencer Matthews was one of the cast members of Made In Chelsea, but is more famous for quitting I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in mysterious circumstances, which was later revealed to be because of his addiction to steroids.
You can hear about his experience of taking steroids by watching the video above, but he basically took steroid pills for a few weeks to bulk up and get in shape for an upcoming boxing match.
To be honest, it was not really an insightful interview because he never actually injected any steroids into his body and only used them for a relatively short time.
What was more interesting, however, were the thoughts of Dr Hilary Jones because he discussed the dangers of taking steroids and how easy they are to get hold of, and listed all of the possible side effects that can occur as a result of taking these anabolic steroids.
For instance, he pointed out that in the short term people may experience acne, stretch marks, visible veins and hair loss, and in the long term may cause more serious problems such as liver tumours, prostate cancer and heart disease, as well as testicular shrinkage, low sperm count and infertility.
Of course I have listed many of these side effects a number of times on this site, but it has a lot more resonance when it comes from a well-respected medical professional such as Dr Hilary Jones.
So if you are contemplating taking steroids yourself, you should take these words on board and find other ways to bulk up and burn fat.
For example, you might want to buy some of these legal steroids instead because these have no adverse side effects and are 100% legal because they are made from natural ingredients.
Alternatively, you could simply train hard in the gym with lots of strength training, and consume plenty of protein every day to fuel muscle growth.
If you are just looking to cut fat rather than build muscle, you should simply do lots of cardio work in the gym and reduce the number of calories that you are consuming every day.
As Spencer Matthews found out to his cost, it is easy to be tempted into taking steroids because they do offer a shortcut and will help you achieve your goals a lot quicker, but the salient point is that it is still possible to achieve your goals safely and effectively without damaging your body in the process.
